St Albans Cricket Club Lost by 7 runs

Match report Saints got off to a great start in the first few overs of a new league season, where the opening attack of O'Toole and White reduced the visitors to 8 for 2, however Stevenage started to fightback with the next wicket not falling until they had reached the 90's. O'Toole and White did the lions share of the bowling with O'Toole returning a cache of 5 wickets and White close behind with 4. The Stevenage last pair could not be dislodged and added a vital 15 runs to the score, something that later would become very important as the game turned out. Saints got away to a bad start with Howeson being bowled out in the 2nd over. Edbrooke and Pickett got the score moving only for Pickett to bowled when he looked set for a big score. Wickets tumbled at regular intervals despite useful contributions from Edbrooke, Gilbert and Caley, however with none of the top order able to go on and make a substanitial score the two bowling heroes White and O'Tool were bought to the wicket, once again, but this time to perform with the bat. They took the score to within 30 when White was out, leaving O'Toole to try and coax the tail to the winning target. With 20 runs required a mix up with Crofts resulted in O'Toole being run out. A great rear guard action from 1st XI debutant Frozzie Khan and Mike Crofts took the match to a thrilling climax. Going into the last over all results were possible. Khan unfortunately could not perform any true heroics with the bat and was bowled, with 3 balls remaining, trying to hit a much needed boundary.
So a loss to start the 2001 campaign for Caley's troops, the team needs to pick themsleves up and put together a much improved all round performance for next weeks visit to West Herts.
